Tap the FAFSA: Top 10 Tips for Tax Preparation Programs When Serving Low-income Students
If you provide tax assistance to students or host a tax site at a community college, learn why FAFSA assistance would be a useful service for your program.
During this training participants learned about the Center for Economic Progress’s Financial Aid U program and how it was specifically designed to support and provide resources for tax preparation programs looking to help clients’ access higher education opportunities.
Since 75% of information needed on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) comes directly off the tax return, your expertise as a tax preparer will help clients complete this form as early as possible to guarantee they receive the full amount of state and federal aid to which they are entitled.
The training also covered the following topics:
- Understanding the need for providing FAFSA and higher education financing assistance at tax time for low- and moderate-income clients;
- How easy it is to provide this assistance at tax time;
- Understanding the relationship between these services and typical community tax prep clients; and
- The main concepts related to FAFSA and higher education financing assistance.
