Programs across the country are working to raise awareness of the need for financial aid for low-income and first-generation students. What are you doing?

Financial Aid Awareness Week

A new component of the 2011 Financial Aid U program is Financial Aid Awareness Week. This week strives for recognition that low-income and first-generation students often do not receive the financial aid they need to complete a post-secondary degree. Ten programs in some of the largest cities in the country will be working to pass resolutions and proclamations declaring this week Financial Aid Awareness Week.

  • The Federal Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is so complicated that many students simply give up before completing it
  • Students who fill out the FAFSA are 50% more likely to attend college than those who do not
  • More than 40 per cent of community college students who are eligible for a Federal Pell Grant did not apply in 2007-08 and nearly 25 per cent of eligible students attending four-year public institutions did not apply for aid
  • College attendance rates for low-income households lagging 20 to 40 percent behind their higher-income counterparts
