State Legislative Associate, Center for Responsible Lending

Location: Durham, NC

Position Description:
 
CRL is seeking top candidates for the position of State Legislative Associate.   The associate will work to eliminate abusive financial practices and protect family assets at a state level.  This position will be based in the Center's Durham, NC office.
 
Essential Responsibilities:
 
•    Formulating both legislative and non-legislative strategies to advance the Center’s policy agenda;
•    Establishing new/building existing relationships among a diverse range of community groups, political interests, opinion-leaders and other stakeholders;
•    Directly providing technical support to state-based coalitions and coordinating support from other CRL staff (e.g. legal, communications, research, outreach). Example of this assistance include advice on messaging, drafting and analyzing legislation, plainly communicating empirical research for policy-makers and helping coalitions attract new potential allies;
•    Directly engaging a broad political range of state legislative leadership, committee members, rank and file legislators and staff and allies in order to enact legislative changes;
•    Monitoring market and policy developments; and
•    Representing the Center at conferences and with the media.
•    Help leverage state-level networks and policy changes to influence national legislative and regulatory policy. Significant out-of-state travel (25% of time on average) will be required.
 
Minimum Qualifications:
 
•    Bachelor’s Degree
•    Significant experience (2-5 years) in the policy-making process or demonstrated facility in building strong relationships with diverse constituencies is required.
•    Excellent verbal and written communications skills
•    Excellent research and analytical skills
•    Capacity to develop innovative, multi-faceted strategies
•    Self-starter, adaptable, able to initiate and coordinate multiple projects with minimal supervision.
•    Ability to work well as part of a team and with a diverse group of people and settings.
 
Desired Qualifications:
 
•    Direct experience working to influence policy
•    Market knowledge or experience with macro-economic issues, banking and consumer finance
•    Experience working with media
•    Advanced degree in a law, policy, business or related field
 
Physical Requirements:
 
Frequently requires use of manual dexterity and repetitive motions, primarily with the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.  Must be able to occasionally lift and exert force of up to 10 pounds.

White Earth Volunteers

White Earth Investment Initiative

The clientele at White Earth Investment Initiatives VITA site is unlike just about any other – the site is on an Indian Reservation. Despite its rural location in a town of 1,000, White Earth offers a wide array of services, including homebuyer education, housing counseling, savings and trust matching programs and free tax preparation.
