At the National Level...
we're a voice for low-income workers and the organizations that meet their tax and financial services needs. We advance and support policies that, ultimately, will secure greater financial stability and economic opportunity for the families we serve.
At the Local Level...
our 2,100-plus members provide free tax preparation services to low-income families. Our staff and volunteers, who work under the banner of the community Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) field, help families claim tax credits they might otherwise overlook, ensuring they receive the full tax refund to which they're entitled. For many, that refund provides a once-a-year opportunity to pay down debt, purchase necessities and perhaps start building assets.
Community VITA programs offer a high-quality choice – one that’s free, accessible and equipped to help families. Together, we are the nation's 4th largest provider of tax preparation services, completing an estimated 1.2 million federal tax returns each year.
When NCTC surveyed our field after the 2009 tax filing season, 161 programs submitted data, providing a profile of 56% of community tax preparation organizations.
We learned:
- Members assisted 650,000 workers and their families, preparing their tax returns.
- Nearly 20,000 community volunteers worked on the returns.
- Refunds to taxpayers totaled nearly $950 million.
